In the past we worked on our cars as a matter of pride. These days, cars have become more complicated and we tend to leave the heavy lifting to the pros. With the economic crisis, money is tight and that means handling some car repair work yourself to save a buck.
In these modern times, the idea of working on your own car you can put the fear of God in some of us. adjustment on a carburetor are long gone. Open the lid and the average modern car looks very different. Things are so efficiently packed into a car that just getting into the part after seems impossible. Do not let it defeat you.
At minimum, you should carry on maintaining the family car with least problems. You can change oil, check all belts and rotate the tires with minimum effort. Preventive maintenance is often the key to avoiding major repairs down the road. little care in each of these areas can save you big money down the road.
Changing your oil is pretty much the same task as it ever was. Instead of basic oil, try using synthetic motor oil for lubricating your engine really. Mobile 1 and Castrol brands are excellent. They will cost little more, but should not be changed for 5000, 7500 or 10,000 miles or more, depending on the type of car you drive. They will also save you a lot of wear and tear on your engine.
Buying new tires can be expensive. Rotate your every 6000 miles, or as suggested in your owner's manual. Also, check the pressure. Do not go beyond what it says on the tire sidewall. Instead, look at the inside of your driver's door frame for the recommended pressures. Given the pressures and the tires can rotate the double life of your tires, a big money saver.
The more serious repair? If you go to them? Well, it depends on your mechanical abilities and your knowledge about cars. If you've never worked on one before, it is probably unwise to make your first job a serious type of repair. However, you can grab a repair manual for your car and start on it. Just make sure you have another car around in case the repair must be repaired!
